Fruit tegen hoge bloeddruk*
This week on Health Watch, we’re talking about summer foods. If you need to watch your blood pressure, you can find help in summer gardens. Potassium is important for maintaining a healthy blood pressure, and summer fruits are great sources of this nutrient.
Lona Sandon, a registered dietitian at UT Southwestern Medical Center, says summer melons such as cantaloupe and watermelon are especially good sources of potassium. A quarter of a cantaloupe contains about 20 percent of the recommended daily potassium intake. Two cups of watermelon provide about 10 percent of the recommended daily value. Beans, tomatoes and potatoes are other summer foods that are good potassium sources. The U.S. Department of Agriculture recommends that adults get at least 4,044 milligrams of potassium a day. If you’re on blood pressure medication or have kidney problems, talk to your doctor about how much potassium you should be getting.
